From the Quran

رَبَّنَا وَٱبۡعَثۡ فِيهِمۡ رَسُولٗا مِّنۡهُمۡ يَتۡلُواْ عَلَيۡهِمۡ ءَايَٰتِكَ وَيُعَلِّمُهُمُ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ وَٱلۡحِكۡمَةَ وَيُزَكِّيهِمۡۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلۡعَزِيزُ ٱلۡحَكِيمُ

Rabbanā wabʿath fīhim rasūlan minhum yatlū ʿalayhim āyātika wa yuʿallimuhumul-Kitāba wal-ḥikmata wa yuzakkīhim, innaka Antal-ʿAzīzul-Ḥakīm.

Our Lord, send among them a messenger from themselves who will recite to them Your verses and teach them the Book and wisdom and purify them. Indeed, You are the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

Said by Prophet Ibrahim

[ Surah Al-Baqara 2:129 ]

رَبِّ أَرِنِي كَيۡفَ تُحۡيِ ٱلۡمَوۡتَىٰۖ

Rabbi arinī kayfa tuḥyil-mawtā.

My Lord, show me how You give life to the dead.

Said by Prophet Ibrahim

[ Surah Al-Baqara 2:260 ]

سَمِعۡنَا وَأَطَعۡنَاۖ غُفۡرَانَكَ رَبَّنَا وَإِلَيۡكَ ٱلۡمَصِيرُ

Samiʿnā wa aṭaʿnā, ghufrānaka Rabbanā wa ilaykal-maṣīr.

We hear and we obey. Grant us Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the final return.

[ Surah Al-Baqara 2:285 ]

رَبَّنَآ إِنَّكَ جَامِعُ ٱلنَّاسِ لِيَوۡمٖ لَّا رَيۡبَ فِيهِۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يُخۡلِفُ ٱلۡمِيعَادَ

Rabbanā innaka jāmiʿun-nāsi li-yawmin lā rayba fīh, innallāha lā yukhliful-mīʿād.

Our Lord, You will gather the people for a Day about which there is no doubt. Indeed, Allah does not fail in His promise.

[ Surah Aal-i-Imraan 3:9 ]

رَبَّنَآ إِنَّنَآ ءَامَنَّا فَٱغۡفِرۡ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَقِنَا عَذَابَ ٱلنَّارِ

Rabbanā innanā āmannā faghfir lanā dhunūbanā wa qinā ʿadhāban-nār.

Our Lord, we have believed, so forgive us our sins and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

[ Surah Aal-i-Imraan 3:16 ]

رَبَّنَآ ءَامَنَّا بِمَآ أَنزَلۡتَ وَٱتَّبَعۡنَا ٱلرَّسُولَ فَٱكۡتُبۡنَا مَعَ ٱلشَّٰهِدِينَ

Rabbanā āmannā bimā anzalta wattabaʿnar-Rasūla faktubnā maʿash-shāhidīn.

Our Lord, we have believed in what You revealed and we have followed the Messenger, so record us among the witnesses.

[ Surah Aal-i-Imraan 3:53 ]

رَّبَّنَآ إِنَّنَا سَمِعۡنَا مُنَادِيٗا يُنَادِي لِلۡإِيمَٰنِ أَنۡ ءَامِنُواْ بِرَبِّكُمۡ فَـَٔامَنَّاۚ رَبَّنَا فَٱغۡفِرۡ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَكَفِّرۡ عَنَّا سَيِّـَٔاتِنَا وَتَوَفَّنَا مَعَ ٱلۡأَبۡرَارِ

Rabbanā innanā samiʿnā munādiyan yunādī lil-īmāni an āminū bi-Rabbikum fa-āmannā. Rabbanā faghfir lanā dhunūbanā wa kaffir ʿannā sayyi'ātinā wa tawaffanā maʿal-abrār.

Our Lord, we heard a caller calling to faith: 'Believe in your Lord', and we believed. Our Lord, so forgive us our sins, remove from us our misdeeds, and cause us to die among the righteous.

[ Surah Aal-i-Imraan 3:193 ]

رَبَّنَآ ءَامَنَّا فَٱكۡتُبۡنَا مَعَ ٱلشَّٰهِدِينَ

Rabbanā āmannā faktubnā maʿash-shāhidīn.

Our Lord, we have believed, so register us among the witnesses.

[ Surah Al-Maaida 5:83 ]

إِنِّي وَجَّهۡتُ وَجۡهِيَ لِلَّذِي فَطَرَ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ حَنِيفٗاۖ وَمَآ أَنَا۠ مِنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ

Innī wajjahtu wajhiya lilladhī faṭaras-samāwāti wal-arḍa ḥanīfan wa mā anā minal-mushrikīn.

Indeed, I have turned my face toward He who created the heavens and the earth, inclining toward truth, and I am not of those who associate others with Allah.

Said by Prophet Ibrahim

The Prophet opened his night prayer with these words. (Sahih Muslim 771)

[ Surah Al-An'aam 6:79 ]

إِنَّ صَلَاتِي وَنُسُكِي وَمَحۡيَايَ وَمَمَاتِي لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُۥۖ وَبِذَٰلِكَ أُمِرۡتُ وَأَنَا۠ أَوَّلُ ٱلۡمُسۡلِمِينَ

Inna ṣalātī wa nusukī wa maḥyāya wa mamātī lillāhi Rabbil-ʿālamīn. Lā sharīka lahu wa bidhālika umirtu wa anā awwalul-muslimīn.

Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds. He has no partner. This I have been commanded, and I am the first of the Muslims.

[ Surah Al-An'aam 6:162-163 ]

رَبِّ ٱغۡفِرۡ لِي وَلِأَخِي وَأَدۡخِلۡنَا فِي رَحۡمَتِكَۖ وَأَنتَ أَرۡحَمُ ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ

Rabbighfir lī wa li'akhī wa adkhilnā fī raḥmatik, wa Anta arḥamur-rāḥimīn.

My Lord, forgive me and my brother and admit us into Your mercy, for You are the most merciful of the merciful.

Said by Prophet Musa

[ Surah Al-A'raaf 7:151 ]

رَبِّ ٱلسِّجۡنُ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِمَّا يَدۡعُونَنِيٓ إِلَيۡهِۖ وَإِلَّا تَصۡرِفۡ عَنِّي كَيۡدَهُنَّ أَصۡبُ إِلَيۡهِنَّ وَأَكُن مِّنَ ٱلۡجَٰهِلِينَ

Rabbis-sijnu aḥabbu ilayya mimmā yadʿūnanī ilayh, wa illā taṣrif ʿannī kaydahunna aṣbu ilayhinna wa akun minal-jāhilīn.

My Lord, prison is more beloved to me than that to which they invite me. And if You do not turn their plot away from me, I may incline toward them and become of the ignorant.

Said by Prophet Yusuf

[ Surah Yusuf 12:33 ]

رَّبِّ ٱرۡحَمۡهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرٗا

Rabbir-ḥamhumā kamā rabbayānī ṣaghīrā.

My Lord, have mercy upon them as they raised me when I was small.

[ Surah Al-Israa 17:24 ]

رَّبِّ أَدۡخِلۡنِي مُدۡخَلَ صِدۡقٖ وَأَخۡرِجۡنِي مُخۡرَجَ صِدۡقٖ وَٱجۡعَل لِّي مِن لَّدُنكَ سُلۡطَٰنٗا نَّصِيرٗا

Rabbi adkhilnī mudkhala ṣidqin wa akhrijnī mukhraja ṣidqin wajʿal lī min ladunka sulṭānan naṣīrā.

My Lord, cause me to enter a sound entrance and to exit a sound exit, and grant me from Yourself a supporting authority.

[ Surah Al-Israa 17:80 ]

رَبِّ إِنِّي وَهَنَ ٱلۡعَظۡمُ مِنِّي وَٱشۡتَعَلَ ٱلرَّأۡسُ شَيۡبٗا وَلَمۡ أَكُنۢ بِدُعَآئِكَ رَبِّ شَقِيّٗا وَإِنِّي خِفۡتُ ٱلۡمَوَٰلِيَ مِن وَرَآءِي وَكَانَتِ ٱمۡرَأَتِي عَاقِرٗا فَهَبۡ لِي مِن لَّدُنكَ وَلِيّٗا يَرِثُنِي وَيَرِثُ مِنۡ ءَالِ يَعۡقُوبَۖ وَٱجۡعَلۡهُ رَبِّ رَضِيّٗا

Rabbi innī wahanal-ʿaẓmu minnī washtaʿalar-ra'su shayban wa lam akun biduʿā'ika Rabbi shaqiyyā. Wa innī khiftul-mawāliya min warā'ī wa kānatimra'atī ʿāqiran fahab lī min ladunka waliyyā. Yarithunī wa yarithu min āli Yaʿqūb, wajʿalhu Rabbi raḍiyyā.

My Lord, my bones have weakened and my head has filled with white hair, and never have I been unanswered in my supplication to You, my Lord. And I fear my relatives after me, and my wife is barren, so grant me from Yourself an heir who will inherit from me and inherit from the family of Yaʿqub. And make him, my Lord, pleasing to You.

Said by Prophet Zakariyya

[ Surah Maryam 19:4-6 ]

رَبِّ لَا تَذَرۡنِي فَرۡدٗا وَأَنتَ خَيۡرُ ٱلۡوَٰرِثِينَ

Rabbi lā tadharnī fardan wa Anta khayrul-wārithīn.

My Lord, do not leave me alone, and You are the best of inheritors.

Said by Prophet Zakariyya

[ Surah Al-Anbiyaa 21:89 ]

رَبَّنَآ ءَامَنَّا فَٱغۡفِرۡ لَنَا وَٱرۡحَمۡنَا وَأَنتَ خَيۡرُ ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ

Rabbanā āmannā faghfir lanā warḥamnā wa Anta khayrur-rāḥimīn.

Our Lord, we have believed, so forgive us and have mercy upon us, and You are the best of the merciful.

[ Surah Al-Muminoon 23:109 ]

رَّبِّ ٱغۡفِرۡ وَٱرۡحَمۡ وَأَنتَ خَيۡرُ ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ

Rabbighfir warḥam wa Anta khayrur-rāḥimīn.

My Lord, forgive and have mercy, and You are the best of the merciful.

[ Surah Al-Muminoon 23:118 ]

رَبَّنَا ٱغۡفِرۡ لَنَا وَلِإِخۡوَٰنِنَا ٱلَّذِينَ سَبَقُونَا بِٱلۡإِيمَٰنِ وَلَا تَجۡعَلۡ فِي قُلُوبِنَا غِلّٗا لِّلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ رَبَّنَآ إِنَّكَ رَءُوفٞ رَّحِيمٌ

Rabbanaghfir lanā wa li'ikhwāninal-ladhīna sabaqūnā bil-īmāni wa lā tajʿal fī qulūbinā ghillan lilladhīna āmanū, Rabbanā innaka Ra'ūfun Raḥīm.

Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith, and put no resentment in our hearts toward those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful.

[ Surah Al-Hashr 59:10 ]

Upon sneezing

دعاء العطاس
إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُم فَلْيَقُلِ (الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ)، وَلْيَقُلْ لَهُ أَخُوهُ أَوْ صَاحِبُهُ: (يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ)، فَإِذَا قَالَ لَهُ: (يَرحَمُكَ اللَّهُ)، فَلْيَقُلْ: (يَهْدِيكُمُ اللَّهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ)

When you sneeze , then say: Alḥamdulillāh Your companion should say : Yarḥamukallāh When someone says Yarḥamukallāh to you then you should say: Yahdīkumu ‘llāhu wa yuṣliḥu bālakum.

When you sneeze, then say: All praises and thanks are to Allah. Your companion should say: May Allah have mercy upon you. When someone says Yarḥamukallāh to you then you should say: May Allah guide you and set your affairs in order.

When a disbeliever praises Allah after sneezing

ما يقالُ للكافر إذا عطس فحمد الله
يَهْـديكُـمُ اللهُ وَيُصْـلِحُ بالَـكُم

Yahdīkumullāhu wa yuṣliḥu bālakum.

May Allah guide you and set your affairs in order

When angry

دعاء الغضب
أَعـوذُ بِاللهِ مِنَ الشَّيْـطانِ الرَّجيـم

A`ūdhu billāhi minash-Shayṭānir-rajīm.

I seek refuge in Allah from Satan the outcast.

At a sitting or gathering

ما يقال في المجلس
عن ابن عمر قال : كان يعد لرسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في المجلس الواحد مائة مرة من قبل أن يقوم "رب اغفر لي وتب علي إنك أنت التواب الغفور"

Ibn Umar (ra) said: Allah's Messenger () used to repeat in a single sitting: Rabbigh’fir lī wa tub `alayy innaka antat-Tawwābu ‘l-Ghafūr.

Ibn Umar (ra) said: Allah's Messenger () used to repeat in a single sitting: My Lord, forgive me, and accept my repentance, You are the Ever-Relenting, the All-Forgiving.

To one who does you a favour

الدعاء لمن صنع إليك معروفاً
جَزاكَ اللهُ خَـيْراً

Jazākallāhu khayra.

May Allah reward you with good.

To one who pronounces his love for you, for Allah’s sake

الدعاء لمن قال إني أحبك في الله
أَحَبَّـكَ الّذي أَحْبَبْـتَني لَه

Aḥabbaka ‘lladhī aḥbabtanī lah.

May He for Whose sake you love me, love you.

[ Abu Dawud 4/333. Al-Albani graded it good in Sahih Abu Dawud 3/965. Hisn al-Muslim 200 ]

To one who has offered some of his wealth

الدعاء لمن عرض عليك ماله
بارَكَ اللهُ لَكَ في أَهْلِكَ وَمالِك

Bārakallāhu laka fī ahlika wa mālik.

May Allah bless you in your family and your property.

To someone who says "May Allah bless you"

الدعاء لمن قال بارك الله فيك
وَفيكَ بارَكَ الله

Wafīka bārakallāh.

And may Allah bless you.

The scorn of ascribing things to evil omens

دعاء كراهية الطيرة
اللّهُـمَّ لا طَيْـرَ إِلاّ طَيْـرُك، وَلا خَـيْرَ إِلاّ خَـيْرُك، وَلا إِلهَ غَيْـرُك

Allāhumma lā ṭayra illā ṭayruk, wa lā khayra illā khayruk, wa lā ilāha ghayruk.

O Allah there is no portent other than Your portent, no goodness other than Your goodness, and none worthy of worship other than You.

As for bodings of good, these used to please the Prophet () and so when he heard good words from someone, he used to say: "We have taken from you a good portent from your mouth," Abu Dawud, Ahmad. قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم: (لاَ تَدْخُلُوا الْجَنَّةَ حَتَّى تُؤْمِنُوا، وَلاَ تُؤْمِنُوا حَتَّى تَحَابُّوا، أَوَلاَ أَدُلُّكُم عَلَى شَيْءٍ إِذَا فَعَلْتُمُوهُ تَحَابَبْتُم، أَفْشُوا السَّلاَمَ بَيْنَكُمْ)

The Prophet () said: "You shall not enter Paradise until you believe, and you have not believed until you love one another. Shall I tell you of something you can do to make you love one another? Spread the greetings of Salam (peace) amongst yourselves (i.e. between each other).

ثَلاَثٌ مَنْ جَمَعَهُنَّ فَقَدْ جَمَعَ الْإِيمَانَ: الْإِنْصَافُ مِنْ نَفْسِكَ، وَبَذْلُ السَّلاَمِ لِلْعَالَمِ، وَالْإِنْفَاقُ مِنَ الإِقْتَارِ

Three characteristics, whoever combines them, has completed his faith: to be just, to spread greetings to all people and to spend (charitably) out of the little you have.

وَعَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا: أنَّ رَجُلاً سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم أيُّ الْإِسْلاَمِ خَيْرٌ قَالَ: (تُطْعِمُ الطَّعَامَ، وَتَقْرأُ السَّلاَمَ عَلَى مَنْ عَرَفْتَ وَمَنْ لَمْ تَعْرِفْ)

Abdullah bin Umar (RA) said: A man asked the Prophet (), "What is the best act of Islam?" He said, "To feed others and to give greetings of Salam (peace) to those whom you know and to those whom you do not know."

Returning a greeting to a disbeliever

كيف يرد السلام على الكافر إذا سلم
إذَا سَلَّمَ عَلَيْكُمْ أَهْلُ الْكِتَابِ فَقُولُوا: وَعَلَيْكُمْ

If one of the People of the Scripture (i.e. Christians and Jews) greets you, saying As-Salāmu `alaykum, then say (to him): Wa `alaykum.

If one of the People of the Scripture (i.e. Christians and Jews) greets you saying As-Salaamu alaykum, then say (to him): And upon you .

Upon hearing a rooster crow or a donkey braying

دعاء عند سماع صياح الديك ونهيق الحمار
إِذَا سَمِعْتُمْ صِيَاحَ الدِّيَكَةِ فَاسْأَلُوا اللَّهَ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ؛ فَإِنَّهَا رَأَتْ مَلَكاً وَإِذَا سَمِعْتُمْ نَهِيقَ الْحِمَارِ فَتَعَوَّذُوا بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيطَانِ؛ فَإِنَّهُ رَأَى شَيْطَاناً

--

When you hear the cock's crow, ask Allah for His favor upon you for surely it has seen an angel. When you hear the bray of a donkey, seek refuge in Allah from Satan, for surely it has seen a devil.

Upon hearing the barking of dogs at night

دعاء عند سماع نباح الكلاب بالليل
إِذَا سَمِعْتُمْ نُبَاحَ الْكِلاَبِ وَنَهِيقَ الْحَمِيرِ بِاللَّيْلِ فَتَعَوَّذُوا بِاللَّهِ مِنْهُنَّ؛ فَإِنَّهُنَّ يَرَيْنَ مَا لاَ تَرَوْنَ

When you hear a dog barking or a donkey braying in the night, then seek refuge in Allah from them, for surely they have seen what you see not.

For one you have insulted

الدعاء لمن سببته
قال صلى الله عليه وسلم: "اللَّهُم فأيما مؤمن سببته فاجعل ذلك له قربة إليك يوم القيامة"

Allāhumma fa'ayyumā mu'minin sababtuhu faj`al dhālika lahu qurbatan ilayka yawma ‘l-qiyāmah.

O Allah, whomever of the believers I have abused, give him the reward of a sacrificial slaughter for it on the Day of Resurrection.

The etiquette of praising a fellow Muslim

ما يقول المسلم إذا مدح المسلم
قال صلى الله عليه وسلم: "إِذَا كَانَ أَحَدُكُم مَادِحاً صَاحِبَهُ لاَ مَحَالَةَ فَلْيَقُلْ: أَحْسِبُ فُلاَناً وَاللَّهُ حَسِيبُهُ، وَلاَ أُزَكِّي عَلَى اللَّهِ أَحَداً، أَحْسِبُهُ – إِنْ كَانَ يَعْلَمُ ذَاكَ – كَذَا وَكَذَا"

If any of you praises his companion then let him say: Aḥsibu fulānan wallāhu ḥasībuh wa lā uzakkī `alallāhi aḥada.

If any of you praises his companion then let him say: I consider (such and such a person), and Allah is his Assessor, (meaning: and I cannot claim anyone to be pious before Allah) if you know of this (good character trait in the person) to be such and such (saying what he thinks is praiseworthy in that person).

For the one that has been praised

ما يقول المسلم إذا زكي
اللَّهُمَّ لاَ تُؤَاخِذْنِي بِمَا يَقُولُونَ وَاغْفِرْ لِي مَا لاَ يَعْلَمُونَ [وَاجْعَلْنِي خَيْرًا مِمَّا يَظُّنُّونَ]

Allāhumma lā tu'ākhidhnī bimā yaqūlūn, waghfir lī mā lā ya`lamūn [waj`alnī khayran mimmā yaẓunnūn].

O Allah, do not call me to account for what they say and forgive me for what they have no knowledge of [and make me better than they imagine].

When slaughtering or offering a sacrifice

ما يقول عند الذبح أو النحر
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ [اللَّهُمَّ مِنْكَ وَلَكَ] اللَّهُمَّ تَقَبَّلْ مِنِّي

Bismillāh wallāhu Akbar [Allāhumma minka wa lak] Allāhumma taqabbal minnī.

من أنواع الخير والآداب الجامعة
إِذَا كَانَ جُنْحُ اللَّيْلِ – أَوْ أَمْسَيْتُم – فَـكُفُّوا صِبْيانَـكُم، فَإِنَّ الشَّيَاطِينَ تَنْتَشِرُ حِينَئِذٍ، فَإِذَا ذَهَبَ سَاعَةٌ مِنَ اللَّيلِ فَخَلُّوهُمْ، وَأَغْلِقُوا الأَبْوَابَ وَاذْكُرُوا اسْمَ اللَّهِ؛ فَإِنَّ الشَّيطَانَ لاَ يَفْتَحُ بَاباً مُغلَقاً، وَأَوْكُوا قِرَبَكُمْ، وَاذْكُرُوا اسْمَ اللَّهِ، وَخَمِّرُوا آنِيَتَكُم، وَاذْكُرُوا اسْمَ اللَّهِ، وَلَوْ أَنْ تَعْرُضُوا عَلَيْهَا شَيْئاً، وَأَطْفِئُوا مَصَابِيحَكُمْ.

When night falls, restrain your children (from going out) because at such time the devils spread about. After a period of time has passed, let them be. Shut your doors and mention Allah’s name, for verily the devil does not open a shut door, tie up your water-skins and mention Allah’s name, cover your vessels with anything and mention Allah’s name and put out your lamps.
