From the Quran

رَبَّنَا وَٱجۡعَلۡنَا مُسۡلِمَيۡنِ لَكَ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِنَآ أُمَّةٗ مُّسۡلِمَةٗ لَّكَ وَأَرِنَا مَنَاسِكَنَا وَتُبۡ عَلَيۡنَآۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلتَّوَّابُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

Rabbanā wajʿalnā muslimayni laka wa min dhurriyyatinā ummatan muslimatan lak, wa arinā manāsikanā wa tub ʿalaynā, innaka Antat-Tawwābur-Raḥīm.

Our Lord, make us both submissive to You, and from our descendants a nation submissive to You. Show us our rites and accept our repentance. Indeed, You are the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.

Said by Prophets Ibrahim and Ismaʿil

[ Surah Al-Baqara 2:128 ]

سَمِعۡنَا وَأَطَعۡنَاۖ غُفۡرَانَكَ رَبَّنَا وَإِلَيۡكَ ٱلۡمَصِيرُ

Samiʿnā wa aṭaʿnā, ghufrānaka Rabbanā wa ilaykal-maṣīr.

We hear and we obey. Grant us Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the final return.

[ Surah Al-Baqara 2:285 ]

رَبَّنَا لَا تُؤَاخِذۡنَآ إِن نَّسِينَآ أَوۡ أَخۡطَأۡنَاۚ رَبَّنَا وَلَا تَحۡمِلۡ عَلَيۡنَآ إِصۡرٗا كَمَا حَمَلۡتَهُۥ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبۡلِنَاۚ رَبَّنَا وَلَا تُحَمِّلۡنَا مَا لَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا بِهِۦۖ وَٱعۡفُ عَنَّا وَٱغۡفِرۡ لَنَا وَٱرۡحَمۡنَآۚ أَنتَ مَوۡلَىٰنَا فَٱنصُرۡنَا عَلَى ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ

Rabbanā lā tu'ākhidhnā in nasīnā aw akhṭa'nā. Rabbanā wa lā taḥmil ʿalaynā iṣran kamā ḥamaltahu ʿalal-ladhīna min qablinā. Rabbanā wa lā tuḥammilnā mā lā ṭāqata lanā bih. Waʿfu ʿannā waghfir lanā warḥamnā, Anta Mawlānā fanṣurnā ʿalal-qawmil-kāfirīn.

Our Lord, do not take us to task if we forget or fall into error. Our Lord, do not lay upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, do not burden us with more than we have strength to bear. Pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy upon us. You are our Protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people.

To each request in this verse Allah answered: 'Yes.' (Sahih Muslim 126). Whoever recites the last two verses of al-Baqarah at night, they will suffice him. (Sahih al-Bukhari 5009)

[ Surah Al-Baqara 2:286 ]

رَبَّنَآ إِنَّنَآ ءَامَنَّا فَٱغۡفِرۡ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَقِنَا عَذَابَ ٱلنَّارِ

Rabbanā innanā āmannā faghfir lanā dhunūbanā wa qinā ʿadhāban-nār.

Our Lord, we have believed, so forgive us our sins and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

[ Surah Aal-i-Imraan 3:16 ]

رَبَّنَا ٱغۡفِرۡ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَإِسۡرَافَنَا فِيٓ أَمۡرِنَا وَثَبِّتۡ أَقۡدَامَنَا وَٱنصُرۡنَا عَلَى ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ

Rabbanaghfir lanā dhunūbanā wa isrāfanā fī amrinā wa thabbit aqdāmanā wanṣurnā ʿalal-qawmil-kāfirīn.

Our Lord, forgive us our sins and our excesses in our affairs, make our feet firm, and give us victory over the disbelieving people.

[ Surah Aal-i-Imraan 3:147 ]

رَّبَّنَآ إِنَّنَا سَمِعۡنَا مُنَادِيٗا يُنَادِي لِلۡإِيمَٰنِ أَنۡ ءَامِنُواْ بِرَبِّكُمۡ فَـَٔامَنَّاۚ رَبَّنَا فَٱغۡفِرۡ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَكَفِّرۡ عَنَّا سَيِّـَٔاتِنَا وَتَوَفَّنَا مَعَ ٱلۡأَبۡرَارِ

Rabbanā innanā samiʿnā munādiyan yunādī lil-īmāni an āminū bi-Rabbikum fa-āmannā. Rabbanā faghfir lanā dhunūbanā wa kaffir ʿannā sayyi'ātinā wa tawaffanā maʿal-abrār.

Our Lord, we heard a caller calling to faith: 'Believe in your Lord', and we believed. Our Lord, so forgive us our sins, remove from us our misdeeds, and cause us to die among the righteous.

[ Surah Aal-i-Imraan 3:193 ]

رَبَّنَا ظَلَمۡنَآ أَنفُسَنَا وَإِن لَّمۡ تَغۡفِرۡ لَنَا وَتَرۡحَمۡنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡخَٰسِرِينَ

Rabbanā ẓalamnā anfusanā wa in lam taghfir lanā wa tarḥamnā lanakūnanna minal-khāsirīn.

Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.

Said by Prophet Adam and Hawwa

[ Surah Al-A'raaf 7:23 ]

سُبۡحَٰنَكَ تُبۡتُ إِلَيۡكَ وَأَنَا۠ أَوَّلُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

Subḥānaka tubtu ilayka wa anā awwalul-mu'minīn.

Exalted are You. I have repented to You, and I am the first of the believers.

Said by Prophet Musa

[ Surah Al-A'raaf 7:143 ]

رَبِّ ٱغۡفِرۡ لِي وَلِأَخِي وَأَدۡخِلۡنَا فِي رَحۡمَتِكَۖ وَأَنتَ أَرۡحَمُ ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ

Rabbighfir lī wa li'akhī wa adkhilnā fī raḥmatik, wa Anta arḥamur-rāḥimīn.

My Lord, forgive me and my brother and admit us into Your mercy, for You are the most merciful of the merciful.

Said by Prophet Musa

[ Surah Al-A'raaf 7:151 ]

أَنتَ وَلِيُّنَا فَٱغۡفِرۡ لَنَا وَٱرۡحَمۡنَاۖ وَأَنتَ خَيۡرُ ٱلۡغَٰفِرِينَ ۞ وَٱكۡتُبۡ لَنَا فِي هَٰذِهِ ٱلدُّنۡيَا حَسَنَةٗ وَفِي ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ إِنَّا هُدۡنَآ إِلَيۡكَۚ

Anta waliyyunā faghfir lanā warḥamnā wa Anta khayrul-ghāfirīn. Waktub lanā fī hādhihid-dunyā ḥasanatan wa fil-ākhirati innā hudnā ilayk.

You are our Protector, so forgive us and have mercy upon us, and You are the best of forgivers. And decree for us good in this world and in the Hereafter; indeed, we have turned to You.

Said by Prophet Musa

[ Surah Al-A'raaf 7:155-156 ]

رَبِّ إِنِّيٓ أَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنۡ أَسۡـَٔلَكَ مَا لَيۡسَ لِي بِهِۦ عِلۡمٞۖ وَإِلَّا تَغۡفِرۡ لِي وَتَرۡحَمۡنِيٓ أَكُن مِّنَ ٱلۡخَٰسِرِينَ

Rabbi innī aʿūdhu bika an as'alaka mā laysa lī bihi ʿilm, wa illā taghfir lī wa tarḥamnī akun minal-khāsirīn.

My Lord, I seek refuge in You from asking You for that of which I have no knowledge. And unless You forgive me and have mercy upon me, I will be among the losers.

Said by Prophet Nuh

[ Surah Hud 11:47 ]

رَبِّ ٱلسِّجۡنُ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِمَّا يَدۡعُونَنِيٓ إِلَيۡهِۖ وَإِلَّا تَصۡرِفۡ عَنِّي كَيۡدَهُنَّ أَصۡبُ إِلَيۡهِنَّ وَأَكُن مِّنَ ٱلۡجَٰهِلِينَ

Rabbis-sijnu aḥabbu ilayya mimmā yadʿūnanī ilayh, wa illā taṣrif ʿannī kaydahunna aṣbu ilayhinna wa akun minal-jāhilīn.

My Lord, prison is more beloved to me than that to which they invite me. And if You do not turn their plot away from me, I may incline toward them and become of the ignorant.

Said by Prophet Yusuf

[ Surah Yusuf 12:33 ]

رَبَّنَا ٱغۡفِرۡ لِي وَلِوَٰلِدَيَّ وَلِلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ يَوۡمَ يَقُومُ ٱلۡحِسَابُ

Rabbanaghfir lī wa liwālidayya wa lil-mu'minīna yawma yaqūmul-ḥisāb.

Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers on the Day the account is established.

Said by Prophet Ibrahim

[ Surah Ibrahim 14:41 ]

لَّآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّآ أَنتَ سُبۡحَٰنَكَ إِنِّي كُنتُ مِنَ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ

Lā ilāha illā Anta, Subḥānaka innī kuntu minaẓ-ẓālimīn.

There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.

Said by Prophet Yunus

The supplication of Dhun-Nun. No Muslim ever supplicates with it in any matter except that Allah answers him. (Jamiʿ at-Tirmidhi 3505)

[ Surah Al-Anbiyaa 21:87 ]

رَبَّنَآ ءَامَنَّا فَٱغۡفِرۡ لَنَا وَٱرۡحَمۡنَا وَأَنتَ خَيۡرُ ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ

Rabbanā āmannā faghfir lanā warḥamnā wa Anta khayrur-rāḥimīn.

Our Lord, we have believed, so forgive us and have mercy upon us, and You are the best of the merciful.

[ Surah Al-Muminoon 23:109 ]

رَّبِّ ٱغۡفِرۡ وَٱرۡحَمۡ وَأَنتَ خَيۡرُ ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ

Rabbighfir warḥam wa Anta khayrur-rāḥimīn.

My Lord, forgive and have mercy, and You are the best of the merciful.

[ Surah Al-Muminoon 23:118 ]

رَبِّ إِنِّي ظَلَمۡتُ نَفۡسِي فَٱغۡفِرۡ لِي

Rabbi innī ẓalamtu nafsī faghfir lī.

My Lord, indeed I have wronged myself, so forgive me.

Said by Prophet Musa

[ Surah Al-Qasas 28:16 ]

رَبِّ ٱغۡفِرۡ لِي وَهَبۡ لِي مُلۡكٗا لَّا يَنۢبَغِي لِأَحَدٖ مِّنۢ بَعۡدِيٓۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلۡوَهَّابُ

Rabbighfir lī wa hab lī mulkan lā yanbaghī li'aḥadin min baʿdī, innaka Antal-Wahhāb.

My Lord, forgive me and grant me a kingdom such as will not belong to anyone after me. Indeed, You are the Bestower.

Said by Prophet Sulayman

[ Surah Saad 38:35 ]

رَبَّنَا وَسِعۡتَ كُلَّ شَيۡءٖ رَّحۡمَةٗ وَعِلۡمٗا فَٱغۡفِرۡ لِلَّذِينَ تَابُواْ وَٱتَّبَعُواْ سَبِيلَكَ وَقِهِمۡ عَذَابَ ٱلۡجَحِيمِ رَبَّنَا وَأَدۡخِلۡهُمۡ جَنَّٰتِ عَدۡنٍ ٱلَّتِي وَعَدتَّهُمۡ وَمَن صَلَحَ مِنۡ ءَابَآئِهِمۡ وَأَزۡوَٰجِهِمۡ وَذُرِّيَّٰتِهِمۡۚ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلۡعَزِيزُ ٱلۡحَكِيمُ

Rabbanā wasiʿta kulla shay'in raḥmatan wa ʿilman faghfir lilladhīna tābū wattabaʿū sabīlaka wa qihim ʿadhābal-jaḥīm. Rabbanā wa adkhilhum jannāti ʿadninil-latī waʿadtahum wa man ṣalaḥa min ābā'ihim wa azwājihim wa dhurriyyātihim, innaka Antal-ʿAzīzul-Ḥakīm.

Our Lord, You have encompassed all things in mercy and knowledge, so forgive those who have repented and followed Your way, and protect them from the punishment of Hellfire. Our Lord, and admit them to the gardens of perpetual residence which You promised them, and whoever was righteous among their forefathers, their spouses and their offspring. Indeed, it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

Said by The angels who bear the Throne

[ Surah Ghafir 40:7-8 ]

رَبَّنَا ٱغۡفِرۡ لَنَا وَلِإِخۡوَٰنِنَا ٱلَّذِينَ سَبَقُونَا بِٱلۡإِيمَٰنِ وَلَا تَجۡعَلۡ فِي قُلُوبِنَا غِلّٗا لِّلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ رَبَّنَآ إِنَّكَ رَءُوفٞ رَّحِيمٌ

Rabbanaghfir lanā wa li'ikhwāninal-ladhīna sabaqūnā bil-īmāni wa lā tajʿal fī qulūbinā ghillan lilladhīna āmanū, Rabbanā innaka Ra'ūfun Raḥīm.

Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith, and put no resentment in our hearts toward those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful.

[ Surah Al-Hashr 59:10 ]

رَّبَّنَا عَلَيۡكَ تَوَكَّلۡنَا وَإِلَيۡكَ أَنَبۡنَا وَإِلَيۡكَ ٱلۡمَصِيرُ

Rabbanā ʿalayka tawakkalnā wa ilayka anabnā wa ilaykal-maṣīr.

Our Lord, upon You we have relied, and to You we have turned, and to You is the final destination.

[ Surah Al-Mumtahana 60:4 ]

رَبَّنَا لَا تَجۡعَلۡنَا فِتۡنَةٗ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ وَٱغۡفِرۡ لَنَا رَبَّنَآۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلۡعَزِيزُ ٱلۡحَكِيمُ

Rabbanā lā tajʿalnā fitnatan lilladhīna kafarū waghfir lanā Rabbanā, innaka Antal-ʿAzīzul-Ḥakīm.

Our Lord, do not make us a trial for those who disbelieve, and forgive us, our Lord. Indeed, it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

[ Surah Al-Mumtahana 60:5 ]

رَبَّنَآ أَتۡمِمۡ لَنَا نُورَنَا وَٱغۡفِرۡ لَنَآۖ إِنَّكَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيۡءٖ قَدِيرٞ

Rabbanā atmim lanā nūranā waghfir lanā, innaka ʿalā kulli shay'in Qadīr.

Our Lord, perfect for us our light and forgive us. Indeed, You are over all things competent.

[ Surah At-Tahrim 66:8 ]

سُبۡحَٰنَ رَبِّنَآ إِنَّا كُنَّا ظَٰلِمِينَ

Subḥāna Rabbinā innā kunnā ẓālimīn.

Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, we were wrongdoers.

[ Surah Al-Qalam 68:29 ]

رَّبِّ ٱغۡفِرۡ لِي وَلِوَٰلِدَيَّ وَلِمَن دَخَلَ بَيۡتِيَ مُؤۡمِنٗا وَلِلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنَٰتِۖ وَلَا تَزِدِ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ إِلَّا تَبَارَۢا

Rabbighfir lī wa liwālidayya wa liman dakhala baytiya mu'minan wa lil-mu'minīna wal-mu'mināt, wa lā tazidiẓ-ẓālimīna illā tabārā.

My Lord, forgive me and my parents and whoever enters my house a believer, and the believing men and believing women. And do not increase the wrongdoers except in ruin.

Said by Prophet Nuh

[ Surah Nooh 71:28 ]

Seeking forgiveness and repentance

الاستغفار والتوبة
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم: "وَاللَّهِ إِنِّي لأَسْتَغفِرُ اللَّهَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ فِي الْيَوْمِ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ سَبْعِينَ مَرَّةٍ"

Allah's Messenger () said: "By Allah, I seek the forgiveness of Allah, and repent to Him more than seventy times in a day.

وَقَالَ صلى الله عليه وسلم: (يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ تُوبُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ فَإِنِّي أَتُوبُ فِي الْيَوْمِ إِلَيْهِ مِائَةَ مَرَّةٍ)

Allah's Messenger () said: "O people, repent to Allah, for I verily repent to Him one hundred times a day.

وَقَالَ صلى الله عليه وسلم: مَنْ قَالَ (أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ الْعَظيمَ الَّذِي لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ الْحَيُّ القَيّوُمُ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيهِ)، غَفَرَ اللَّهُ لَهُ وَإِنْ كَانَ فَرَّ مِنَ الزَّحْفِ.

Allah's Messenger () said: Whoever says: Astaghfirullāha ‘l-'Aẓīm alladhi lā ilāha illā huwa ‘l-ḥayyul-Qayyūm wa atūbu ilayh.

Allah's Messenger () said: Whoever says: I seek the forgiveness of Allah the Mighty, Whom there is none worthy of worship except Him, the Living, the Eternal, and I repent to Him, Allah will forgive him even if he has deserted the army's ranks.

وَقَالَ صلى الله عليه وسلم: أَقْرَبُ مَا يَكُونُ الرَّبُّ مِنَ الْعَبْدِ فِي جَوْفِ اللَّيْلِ الآخِرِ فَإِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ أَنْ تَكُونَ مِمَّنْ يَذْكُرُ اللَّهَ فِي تِلْكَ السَّاعَةِ فَكُنْ

Allah's Messenger () said: "The closest that the Lord comes to the slave is in the last portion of the night. So, if you are able to be among those who remember Allah in this hour, then be among them."

.وَقَالَ صلى الله عليه وسلم: أَقْرَبُ مَا يَكُونُ الْعَبْدُ مِنْ رَبِّهِ وَهُوَ سَاجِدٌ فَأَكثِرُوا الدُّعَاءَ.

Allah's Messenger () said: "The closest that the slave comes to his Lord is when he is prostrating, so invoke Allah much (in prostration)."

[ Muslim 1/350. Hisn al-Muslim 252 ]

.وَقَالَ صلى الله عليه وسلم: إِنَّهُ لَيُغَانُ عَلَى قَلْبِي وَإِنِّي لأَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ فِي الْيَوْمِ مِائَةَ مَرَّةٍ.

Allah's Messenger () said: "It is a heavy thing for my heart if I do not seek Allah's forgiveness a hundred times a day."

[ Muslim 4/2075. Ibn 'Athir explains that the Prophet () was always vigilant in his remembrance and drawing near to Allah, and if he forgot to do any of what he normally did from time to time, or it slipped his mind, he felt as if he had wronged himself and so he would begin to seek the forgiveness of Allah. See Jami'ul-'Usool 4/386. Hisn al-Muslim 253 ]

Upon committing a sin

ما يقول ويفعل من أذنب ذنباً
مَا مِنْ عَبْدٍ يُذنِبُ ذَنْباً فَيُحْسِنُ الطُّهُورَ، ثُمَّ يَقُومُ فَيُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْنِ، ثُمَّ يَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ إِلاَّ غَفَرَ اللَّهُ لَهُ

There is not any slave of Allah who commits a sin, then he perfects his purification and stands to pray two Rak'ahs of prayer, then seeks Allah's forgiveness, except that Allah will forgive him.

سُبْحـانَكَ اللّهُـمَّ وَبِحَمدِك، أَشْهَـدُ أَنْ لا إِلهَ إِلاّ أَنْتَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتوبُ إِلَـيْك

Subhānaka Allāhumma wa biḥamdik, ash-hadu an lā ilāha illā ant, astaghfiruka wa atību ilayk.

Glory is to You, O Allah, and praise is to You. I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but You. I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You.

Returning a supplication of forgiveness

الدعاء لمن قال غفر الله لك
وَلَكَ

Walaka

And you.
